Advancing Article 6 carbon market readiness in Peru, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka

UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC) recently completed successful inception missions in Peru, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka, marking the launch of the Integrated Assessment for Article 6 (IAA6) project funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) in the three countries.
During these visits, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre engaged with government agencies and stakeholders to lay the foundation for using Article 6 carbon markets strategically to raise climate ambition and meet sustainable development goals.
Peru: Setting the stage for collaborative climate action
From February 19-24, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre held a series of meetings in Peru, engaging with the Ministry of Environment and other key government stakeholders. These discussions helped establish a shared understanding of Peru’s national priorities and resulted in an endorsed roadmap for the IAA6 project, including stakeholder engagement and communication strategies to facilitate effective outreach.Tanzania: Bridging gaps in carbon market preparedness
UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre met with the Vice President’s Office and other ministries to discuss Tanzania’s climate ambitions under Article 6 in the week of March 4-9. To develop a holistic understanding, the team conducted consultations with local non-government stakeholders and representatives from international development agencies. One outcome was a prioritized set of activities to support Tanzania’s sustainable development and climate goals.Sri Lanka: Laying the groundwork for implementation
UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre’s mission to Sri Lanka from March 18-23 included introductory meetings with the senior officials from the Ministry of Environment, chaired by the Hon’ble Secretary. Several brainstorming sessions and bilateral meetings were held to identify priorities and activities for support under the project. The engagements also fostered buy-in from governmental and stakeholder groups, paving the way for collaborative climate action and strategic use of Article 6 carbon markets.Building capacity for long-term climate goals
The IAA6 project aims to support evidence-based policy making by enabling countries to integrate Article 6 carbon markets into their broader climate and development frameworks. Through South-South cooperation, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre will continue to assist Peru, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka in aligning their domestic mitigation strategies with the Paris Agreement’s long-term goals, ensuring that carbon markets contribute to both environmental and social objectives.Related content
