The Government of Mozambique (GoM) is committed to taking urgent measures to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. The country seeks to contribute to the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C, as reaffirmed by the Glasgow Climate Pact. Although Mozambique's contribution to climate change in the form of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is relatively small, the country is determined to play its role in achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement, in a manner consistent with its status of a developing country and the need to provide sustainable economic growth.
Mozambique needs to ensure that its next NDCs reflect high ambition for the mitigation contribution from the municipal waste sector, taking into consideration existing plans and frameworks for ambitious climate action in solid waste management. To this end, Mozambique has requested support from the NDC Partnership to perform a stocktake on the implementation of Solid Waste Management GHG Mitigation efforts under the country’s NDC and establish GHG emission scenarios for the Solid Waste Management contribution to the upcoming NDC.
In response to the request for support, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre is providing technical assistance to:
- Perform an NDC implementation stocktake for the Solid Waste Sector
- Identify and prioritise solid waste management practices for the Updated NDC
- Develop an NDC Update contribution for the Solid Waste Sector and an Action Plan for implementation
