Thai students joined global climate discussions at COP29 through the SPAR6C programme, gaining firsthand experience in carbon markets and climate policy.
In November 2023, four university students from Thailand had the unique opportunity to attend COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, thanks to the support of the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C) programme. Selected through a competitive process, these young students brought their passion and dedication to the global stage.
Two of the students, Ponpakin Phruttiwongwanit and Romchat Poungcham, were part of the first cohort of participants in the Research Mentorship Programme of the SPAR6C Community of Practice for Article 6 Implementing Countries (CoP-ASIC), led by UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre.
"Joining COP29 has made me realized that there are still many dimensions of climate change and Article 6 that I haven't learned about from, the policy level to indigenous groups. Capacity building among Thai youths is essential in order to strengthen knowledge and skills needed for youths as the future generations to take care climate solutions." Ponpakin Phruttiwongwanit said of the opportunity to join COP29.
“A golden opportunity”
Both Ponpakin Phruttiwongwanit and Romchat Poungcham have recently completed the first phase of COP-ASIC, completing and presenting a novel research project relevant to Article 6, and are both currently engaged in internships funded by the SPAR6C program.
"COP29 has widened my perspective towards climate impact on social and cultural environment. There are more than just a scientific side that youths have to take into account " said Romchat Poungcham.
A third student, Kolatat Phaiboonnukulkij, has been selected to be a part of the second cohort of students in the Research Mentorship Programme and will begin in February of 2025.
"I have a golden opportunity to get connected with experts on satellite technology. Private sector can be a part of climate solution in Thailand and any other countries." He said of the participation in COP-ASIC.
The fourth attendee, Jiraphat Sritawong, was also part of the Thailand youth delegate team and designated speaker at the youth-focused side events.
"Youth voice should be heard. We have potential and should be a part of setting a direction towards climate goals, rather than being invited to join in the COP event." He said.
Including diverse voices in sustainable carbon markets
The students focused on key themes such as just transition, Article 6 and market mechanisms, climate technology innovation, climate finance, and sustainable development. Throughout the conference, they actively participated in dialogues, attended high-level negotiations, and gained valuable insights into the complexities and challenges of global climate governance.
A highlight of their participation was their involvement in moderating and speaking at the 'Just Energy Transition for ASEAN Youth' session. Their contributions not only showcased youth leadership but also emphasized the importance of including diverse voices in shaping sustainable solutions and underscoring the need for expediting action in addressing climate change.
Reflecting on their COP29 experience, the students expressed how transformative it was to witness firsthand the challenges and opportunities in international climate negotiations. They returned home with a renewed sense of urgency and a deeper understanding of the collaborative effort needed to address the climate crisis.
SPAR6C CoP-ASIC remains committed to empowering youth as key stakeholders in global climate action, fostering the next generation of climate leaders.
