Efficient and Climate-friendly Cooling: The Kigali Amendment
Efficient and Climate-friendly Cooling: the Kigali Amendment
UNEP DTU Partnership is coordinating and authoring part of the contents of the UN Environment Scientific Assessment on the Climate and other Benefits of the Kigali Amendment and Energy Efficient Cooling.
This assessment is part of a UN Environment Project “Global High-Level Leadership, Advocacy, and Communication” funded by the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP), a philanthropic program to support the implementation of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
The Kigali Amendment focuses on phasing down the production and consumption of HFCs, strong greenhouse gases widely used as refrigerant in air conditioners and refrigerators. The Global Scientific Assessment will assess the existing knowledge on implementing the Kigali Amendment and enhanced cooling efficiency. The objective of the assessment is to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient and climate-friendly cooling options in all countries.
The process builds on UN Environment’s assessment experiences and uses the approach of engaging a group of experts in a neutral, authoritative consensus-based assessment of existing scientific and economic studies. The scientific assessment will build on existing studies around the world and undertaken by leading experts, under the guidance of a steering committee representing key institutions on the issue.
The reports will go through two rounds of peer review. It will assess the different technical solutions for enhancing cooling efficiency and shifting to climate-friendly refrigerant, their costs and benefits. It will establish pathways for accelerated implementation and policy recommendations for policymakers.
The report will be used to support the UN Environment's campaign for ambitious national actions on energy efficient and climate-friendly cooling.
