The spread of the Internet combined with the emergence of open access platforms allows for the wide and rapid diffusion of technical design specifications and codified engineering knowledge, e.g., through open designs, discussion forums, free online courses, and instructional text and videos.

The long-term objectives of the project are to contribute to poverty reduction, stimulate economic growth and increase the supply of sustainable energy. The short- to medium-term objective is to explore the market potential and learn more about how to design solutions and business models that are suitable for rural electrification.
