- Publication 16 August 2021 The transition to aquaponics in support of a circular bioeconomy: policy recommendations to overcome geographical and scale barriers We explore aquaponics in the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) through policy analysis, a review of the historical context, and semi‐structured case study interviews. The semi‐structured case study interviews are conducted with relevant actors that have a stake in the future development of aquaponics. These actorsinclude: (1) large scale commercial salmon producers, who are currently moving a larger proportion of the smolt production on land to counter problems with sea lice; …
- Publication 16 August 2021 The Long Road to a Common Understanding Article 6 of the Paris Agreement aims to increase NDC ambition by mitigating emissions through voluntary cooperation among Parties. Such cooperation is pursued in three different ways: 1) decentralized cooperative approaches that involveInternationally transferable mitigation outcomes (ITMOs, described in Art. 6.2), 2) a centralized mechanism that generates emission reductions and contributes to sustainable development (Art. 6.4) and/or 3) non-market approaches (Art. 6.8). The three approaches…
- Publication 16 August 2021 The emerging regulatory landscape for aquaponics in Scandinavia- a case study for the transition to a circular economy We explore aquaponics in the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) through policy analysis, semi‐structured case study interviews with industry actors, and a review of the historical context. We find the regulatory landscape for aquaponics in respective countries has emerged in reaction to historical precedents in aquaculture and agriculture, and specific legislation on aquaponics is slow to develop. Aquaponics operations typically must meet two disparate sets of regulations. As…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Climate change adaptation and smaller businesses in the Global South: defining roles, limitations, and touch points for positive interventions for MSMEs situated in developing countrues How the private sector engages in adaptation represents a significant research gap in the climate change adaptation field, with focus traditionally falling upon adaptation at a household-, community- and national-level. In the last decadehowever, the private sector has begun to receive greater attention, particularly with regards to how it can contribute to achieving global adaptation goals. In this shift however, emphasis has mainly been upon the role that large, commonly multinational…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Effects of Orientations, Aspect Ratios, Pavement Materials and Vegetation Elements on Thermal Stress inside Typical Urban Canyons The analysis of local climate conditions to test artificial urban boundaries and related climate hazards through modelling tools should become a common practice to inform public authorities about the benefits of planning alternatives. Different finishing materials and sheltering objects within urban canyons (UCs) can be tested, predicted and compared through quantitative and qualitative understanding of the relationships between the microclimatic environment and subjective thermal assessment…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Pathway analysis of a zero-emission transition in the Nordic-Baltic region A zero-emission pathway for the Nordic and Baltic region in Europe is described based on the comprehensive policy and scenario analyses, accompanied by energy system modelling. The analyses show that a least-cost strategy would massively employ renewable energy, particularly in the power sector. Through strong coupling across energy sectors and countries, electricity would play a central role in the decarbonization of the main energy sectors. In particular power-to-heat conversion, where heat…
