- Publication 6 October 2021 Emissions Gap Report 2020 The report finds that, despite a brief dip in carbon dioxide emissions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is still heading for a temperature rise in excess of 3°C this century – far beyond the Paris Agreement goals of limiting global warming to well below 2°C and pursuing 1.5°C. However, a low-carbon pandemic recovery could cut 25 per cent off the greenhouse emissions expected in 2030, based on policies in place before COVID-19. Such a recovery would far outstrip savings foreseen with…

- Publication 5 October 2021 Off-Balance-Sheet Equity: The Engine for Energy Efficiency Capital Mobilization The International Energy Agency estimates that $24.5 trillion of energy-efficiency (EE) investments will be needed through 2040. Debt- and self-financed projects are expected to contribute only a third of this capital due to multiple barriers. On the one hand, self-financed projects require upfront capital from companies’ budgets to be spent on EE, which most would regard as a noncore activity. On the other hand, multiple parties face hurdles in a debt-financed project: 1) banks deem EE…
- Project 1 October 2021 A Circular Bioeconomy for the Kenyan Dairy Sector (VALORISE) The Global food system is the single largest driver of environmental change, contributing to 24% of global emissions and consuming 70% of the world's blue water. At the same time 2 billion people are live with food insecurity. All this while 24% of calories produced for humans are lost or wasted in the supply chain, and food loss and waste (FLW) represents 3.3 billion tons of GHGs - equivalent to making it the 3rd largest emitting 'country' in the world. Looking at the Kenyan dairy-sector, the…
- Publication 30 September 2021 Transport In 2019, before the COVID-19 global health pandemic altered production and consumption patterns, the transport sector accounted for around 24 per cent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions worldwide (1). Out of this, road transport accounts for three-quarters of emissions and urban transport accounted for halft of these emissions (2). Not least, urban transport results in additional negative social and environmental impacts, such as local air pollution (through emissions of nitrogen oxides…
- Event 30 September 2021 Skills and knowledge gap assessment in the commercial and manufacturing sectors in Kenya (Webinar) This webinar presents the process and results of the “Assessment of Skills and Knowledge Gap in Energy Efficiency Professionals in Kenya”, conducted over the past year. Through a brief exposition, the main findings and the perspective of stakeholders, mainly from the education sector, but also from the government and the private sector will be depicted. Likewise, proposals to address and mitigate the gap and to develop lines of action to expand energy efficiency skills in Kenya, will be…
- Publication 28 September 2021 Buildings Buildings are foundational items of urban development, as they sustain all the key functions of a city, from housing to services to communications (1). What is more, today’s urban areas transform and distribute energy, sustain biodiversity, and provide well-being to city dwellers (2). As such, buildings have become, more than ever before, the lifeblood of the world’s fast-growing urban fabric.
- Publication 28 September 2021 Solid waste management The municipal solid waste management sector represents a major challenge for developing countries due to significant environmental and socioeconomic issues involving rapid urbanization, inappropriate municipal solid waste management practices, and the existence of the informal waste sector. in these countries, municipal solid waste management systems are often inefficient and operate to low standards (1, 2). Municipal solid waste management is characterized by low collection rates and the lack…
