- Publication 16 August 2021 Emissions Gap Report 2019 This is the tenth edition of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report. It provides the latest assessment of scientific studies on current and estimated future greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and compares these with the emission levels permissible for the world to progress on a least-cost pathway to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. This difference between “where we are likely to be and where we need to be” has become known as the ‘emissions gap’. Reflecting on…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Adaptation Metrics. Current Landscape and Evolving Practices Effective adaptation assessment frameworks and metrics are essential for tracking and assessing climate change adaptation actions and progress. If used properly, adaptation metrics can enhance our understanding of what works and what does not work, why, and under which circumstances. Adaptation metrics are central to the learning process, as well as in guiding future adaptation efforts. Although frameworks and metrics to track adaptation are still at the early stages of development and…

- Publication 16 August 2021 Introduction This tenth edition of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report provides an independent scientific assessment of how countries’ climate pledges and actions are affecting the global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) trend, comparing it with the emission reductions necessary to limit global warming to well below 2°C and 1.5°C in accordance with the Paris Agreement. This difference between where we are likely to be by 2030 and where we need to be has become known as the …
- Publication 16 August 2021 Bridging the gap: Global transformation of the energy system The energy sector will be essential in the enhanced global mitigation efforts required to bridge the emissions gap in 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050. This will necessitate a complete transformation of the way energy is produced and consumed. To illustrate the scale of the challenge, coal-fired power plants were the single largest contributor to emissions growth in 2018, an increase of 2.9 per cent compared with the previous year and surpassing annual total emissions of 10 GtCO2 …
- Publication 16 August 2021 A road map for establishing information systems for climate action and support At the Paris climate conference (COP-21) in December 2015, the Conference of the Parties decided to adopt the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This was the first time that 195 Parties had agreed on a universal, legally binding climate instrument. During COP-21, the Parties agreed that each Party is to communicate a nationally determined contribution (NDC) every five years. Also, a Party may at any time modify its existing NDC with a view to…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Challenges to establishing and sustaining local production of re-newable energy technologies in Sub-Saharan Africa Component production in the renewable energy (RE) sector, specifically of solar PV and wind turbine components, has been localised across various countries in Africa as part of the increasing diffusion of these RE technologies over the past decade. Local factories have been established in spite of ever cheaper world market prices for RE technologies, which would appear to favour the importation of components from abroad over local pro-duction. In this report, we address this apparent paradox by…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Trade in environmentally sound technologies in the ASEAN region The development and diffusion of environmentally sound technologies (ESTs) are crucial to the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. International trade is an important channel and enabler of the diffusion of ESTs, especially in developing countries. Given the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region’s emphasis on promoting the diffusion of renewable energy technologies and implementing the sustainable development agenda, the potential for expanded trade in ESTs…
