- Publication 16 August 2021 How many firms benefit from a window of opportunity? Knowledge spillovers, industry characteristics, and catching up in the Chinese biomass power plant industry The literature on the catching up of latecomer countries has pointed at windows of opportunity as a precondition for catching up. Previous research has however failed to illuminate the determining factors affecting the number of firms benefitting from windows of opportunity. The current article addresses this gap by combining insights on the nature of knowledge spillovers with sectoral characteristics. This perspective is applied empirically by analyzing the number of firms benefitting from a …
- Publication 16 August 2021 Clean captive power: Understanding the uptake and growth of commercial and industrial (C&I) solar PV in Kenya The UNEP-DTU Partnership, with support from DANIDA, is implementing a three-year project, The Technology, Markets and Investment for Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Development (TEMARIN) in two African countries, namely Kenya and Uganda. This project aims to: 1) analyse successful case studies of market-led interventions and mechanisms in Kenya, and identify key learnings; 2) support technology transfer partnerships in respect of a selected climate mitigation and adaptation technology in…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Policy transfer processes and renewable energy penetration: a comparative analysis of Peru, Thailand, and Uganda Low-carbon technologies must be widely adopted at a large scale to address climate change and enhance access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy. The uptake of those technologies is often supported by specific policies developed at a national or regional level and those policies, like the technologies themselves, can diffuse from one place to another. This paper sheds some light on this ‘policy transfer’ and investigates the dynamics, the actors and the processes involved. We…
- Publication 16 August 2021 High Energy-Efficient District Cooling System and Its Engineering Applications in India This paper introduces the studies and experience learned in district cooling project development in developed countries and adaptation process in India for city-level rapid assessment. There are five pilot Indian cities chosen to go through all the process of rapid assessment so as to outline the barriers, challenges, and potential to develop high energy-efficient district cooling system. The paper also instructs the tech-eco analysis tools for rapid assessment, which is developed by the UNEP…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Who participates in and drives collective action initiatives for a low carbon energy transition? Broad acceptance by and support from the society for the sustainable energy transition is indispensable. Public participation and ownership – in particular through collective action initiatives – is seen as a means to foster this support. Starting with the origin of the cooperative model, we present how it has been evolving until today. We then discuss how energy CAIs are classified and discuss the legal underpinnings and how they related to democratic participation of the membership within…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Collective Action Initiatives in the Energy Transition. Supporters of a strong sustainability paradigm? The overall objective of this contribution is to investigate Collective Action Initiatives (CAIs) in the energy sector (e.g. energy communities, cooperatives and purchasing groups) as a trigger for the implementation of a strong sustainability paradigm. The assumption is that the active involvement of citizens in the energy chain is a crucial requirement when considering the diverse dimensions of sustainability and to define and implement strategies that go beyond the technology-based weak…
- Publication 16 August 2021 The dark side of the sun: solar e-waste and environmental upgrading in the off-grid solar PV value chain The expected increase in the disposal of off-grid solar e-waste (SEW) in the Global South is potentially the dark side of a promising innovation. We suggest placing research aimed at identifying appropriate schemes for the collection and recycling of SEW within a conceptual framework that builds on the literature on environmental upgrading in global value chains (GVC). We advance the GVC literature by incorporating complementary insights from social anthropology and life-cycle assessments,…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Climate-friendly but socially rejected energy-transition pathways: the integration of techno-economic and socio-technical approaches in the Nordic-Baltic region A framework to account for social acceptance in the modelling of energy-transition pathways is outlined. The geographical focus is on the Nordic-Baltic energy region and the technological focus is on onshore wind power and power transmission, which are considered key technologies in achieving carbon-neutral energy systems in northern Europe. We combine qualitative analysis of social acceptance with quantitative assessments of scenarios using techno-economic energy-system modelling. Key factors…
