- Publication 20 December 2022 Transformational Change - Guidance for Technology Needs Assessment Transformational technology cooperation aims to promote systemic, multi-level change for a sustainability transition aligned with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda global goals. Support to developing countries through Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs), including Technology Action Plans (TAPs), has been provided by the UNFCCC and has played a key role in the identification of climate-related technologies that are responsive to countries’ mitigation and adaptation technologies since 2010,…
- Publication 15 December 2022 The dark side of the sun: solar e-waste and environmental upgrading in the off-grid solar PV value chain The expected increase in the disposal of off-grid solar e-waste (SEW) in the Global South is potentially the dark side of a promising innovation. We suggest placing research aimed at identifying appropriate schemes for the collection and recycling of SEW within a conceptual framework that builds on the literature on environmental upgrading in global value chains (GVC). We advance the GVC literature by incorporating complementary insights from social anthropology and life-cycle assessments,…
- Publication 15 December 2022 Impacts of climate change on the public health of the Mediterranean Basin population - Current situation, projections, preparedness and adaptation The Mediterranean Basin is undergoing a warming trend with longer and warmer summers, an increase in the frequency and the severity of heat waves, changes in precipitation patterns and a reduction in rainfall amounts. In this unique populated region, which is characterized by significant gaps in the socio-economic levels particularly between the North (Europe) and South (Africa), parallel with population growth and migration, increased water demand and forest fires risk – the vulnerability of…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Does exposure to noise pollution influence the incidence and severity of COVID-19? Research that analyzes the effect of different environmental factors on the impact of COVID-19 focus primarily on meteorological variables such as humidity and temperature or on air pollution variables. However, noise pollution is also a relevant environmental factor that contributes to the worsening of chronic cardiovascular diseases and even diabetes. This study analyzes the role of short-term noise pollution levels on the incidence and severity of cases of COVID-19 in Madrid from February 1…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Evolution of the minimum mortality temperature (1983–2018): Is Spain adapting to heat? The objective of this study was to analyze at the level of Spain’s 52 provinces province level the temporal evolution of minimum mortality temperatures (MMT) from 1983 to 2018, in order to determine whether the increase in MMT would be sufficient to compensate for the increase in environmental temperatures in Spain for the period. It also aimed to analyze whether the rate of evolution of MMT would be sufficient, were it to remain constant, to compensate for the predicted increase in…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Analysis of the impact of heat waves on daily mortality in urban and rural areas in Madrid The objective of this study was to analyze and compare the effect of high temperatures on daily mortality in the urban and rural populations in Madrid. Data were analyzed from municipalities in Madrid with a population of over 10,000 inhabitants during the period from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2020. Four groups were generated: Urban Metropolitan Center, Rural Northern Mountains, Rural Center, and Southern Rural. The dependent variable used was the rate of daily mortality due to natural…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Poverty trap or means to escape poverty? Empirical evidence on the role of environmental income in rural Nepal Understanding how poverty persists and how this affects environmental reliance has policy implications for poverty reduction and environmental conservation. Employing a panel dataset from rural Nepal, we shed light on this issue, using a combination of parametric and nonparametric models. Results show that, as a population, households will converge at a single equilibrium point in the long term, hence indicating the absence of a poverty trap. The exact asset level of this single equilibrium…
- Publication 14 December 2022 The implications of how climate funds conceptualize transformational change in developing countries The search for globally coordinated mitigation strategies that could contribute effectively towards bridging the gap between current emissions reduction efforts and a rapidly closing 2°C climate target remains contentious. The participation of developing countries through Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) is emerging as a crucial feature to attain this goal. Against this background, two of the major NAMA funding agencies have embraced ‘transformational change (TC)’ and ‘paradigm…
