• Publication 16 August 2021 How to use SVMAs to reduce the Carbon Pricing and Climate Finance Gap: numerical illustrations A temporary gap is generated by the difference between the Social Value of Mitigation Activities (SVMA) and implementable carbon prices. A spectrum of options are available to handle this. These options encompass policy instruments that give different weights to ‘command and control’ measures and to economic incentives. We analyze here how to combine an explicit carbon price that rewards mitigation activities every year and a notional price embedded in devices that reward low carbon investments…
• Publication 16 August 2021 Decision-support tools for climate change mitigation planning This document describes three decision-support tools that can aid the process of planning climate change mitigation actions. The phrase ‘decision-support tools’ refers to science-based analytical procedures that facilitate the evaluation of planning options (individually or compared to alternative options) against a particular evaluation criterion or set of criteria. Most often decision-support tools are applied with the help of purpose-designed software packages and drawing on specialised…
• Publication 16 August 2021 Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action: developing a Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA ) process for prioritization of NAMAs During recent years, Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) has become a key element of mitigation negotiations in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process. At present, NAMA is considered as a key tool to be used by de¬veloping countries to structure and promote their potential emission reductions. Most countries are in the process of identifying NAMAs at national level. In order to select the NAMAs to be implemented first, many countries are willing to…
• Publication 16 August 2021 Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action: Understanding NAMA Cycle There is no internationally defined or agreed Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action(NAMA) cycle, as was the case, for example, with the Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) project cycle. However, there are some common steps that NAMA identification, formulation, and implementation will all go through. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of these steps in the form of a NAMA cycle, from the identification of NAMA ideas to the implementation of a NAMA and of the Measuring, Reporting and…
• Publication 16 August 2021 Understanding the Paris agreement: analysing the reporting requirements under the enhanced transparency framework At the Paris climate conference (COP-21) in December 2015, the Conference of the Parties decided to adopt the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This was the first time that 195 Parties had agreed on a universal, legally binding climate instrument. The Agreement will enter into force on the thirtieth day after the date on which at least 55 Parties to the Convention, accounting in total for at least an estimated 55 percent of total global greenhouse…
• Publication 16 August 2021 Analysis of Grid Emission Factors for the Electricity Sector in Caribbean Countries As part of their capacity development efforts to promote mitigation actions, the UNEP DTU Partnership, together with the UNFCCC Regional Collaborating Centre in the Caribbean, UNDP and OLADE, agreed to collaborate with Caribbean countries willing to update or establish their grid emission factors by undertaking a study to calculate standardized grid emissionfactors (GEF) for sixteen independent nations or groups of countries in the Caribbean region as a basis to the further identification of…
• Publication 16 August 2021 Estimating Solar Energy Potential in Buildings on a Global Level This chapter contributes to the debate around net-zero energy concept from a global perspective. By means of comprehensive modelling, it analyses how much global building energy consumption could be reduced through utilisation of building-integrated solar energy technologies and energy-efficiency improvements. Valuable insights on the locations and building types, in which it is feasible to achieve a net-zero level of energy performance through solar energy utilisation, are presented in world…
