- Publication 14 December 2022 Determinants of adoption in open-source hardware: A review of small wind turbines The successes of open-source software raise the question of whether technological hardware that has been developed based on an open and collaborative mode of innovation can achieve similar levels of diffusion. While some expect such open-source hardware (OSH) to lead to transformational changes in the ways technologies are produced, the available empirical evidence suggests that, to date, the diffusion of most OSH applications has been modest. In this paper, we focus on the limited uptake of…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Evolution of the minimum mortality temperature (1983–2018): Is Spain adapting to heat? The objective of this study was to analyze at the level of Spain’s 52 provinces province level the temporal evolution of minimum mortality temperatures (MMT) from 1983 to 2018, in order to determine whether the increase in MMT would be sufficient to compensate for the increase in environmental temperatures in Spain for the period. It also aimed to analyze whether the rate of evolution of MMT would be sufficient, were it to remain constant, to compensate for the predicted increase in…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Mapping of affordability levels for photovoltaic‑based electricity generation in the solar belt of sub‑Saharan Africa, East Asia and South Asia Lack of access to modern forms of energy hampers eforts to reduce poverty. The provision of electricity to of-grid communities is therefore a long-standing developmental goal. Yet, many of-grid electrifcation projects neglect mid- and long-term operation and maintenance costs. When this is the case, electricity services are unlikely to be afordable to the communities that are the project’s primary target. Here we show that, compared with diesel-powered electricity generation systems, solar…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Analysis of the impact of heat waves on daily mortality in urban and rural areas in Madrid The objective of this study was to analyze and compare the effect of high temperatures on daily mortality in the urban and rural populations in Madrid. Data were analyzed from municipalities in Madrid with a population of over 10,000 inhabitants during the period from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2020. Four groups were generated: Urban Metropolitan Center, Rural Northern Mountains, Rural Center, and Southern Rural. The dependent variable used was the rate of daily mortality due to natural…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Poverty trap or means to escape poverty? Empirical evidence on the role of environmental income in rural Nepal Understanding how poverty persists and how this affects environmental reliance has policy implications for poverty reduction and environmental conservation. Employing a panel dataset from rural Nepal, we shed light on this issue, using a combination of parametric and nonparametric models. Results show that, as a population, households will converge at a single equilibrium point in the long term, hence indicating the absence of a poverty trap. The exact asset level of this single equilibrium…
- Publication 14 December 2022 China's investments in renewable energy in Africa Investments in renewable energy are increasing rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa. The overall purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent and under what conditions these investments are producing economic co-benefits in terms of spillovers and linkage development effects. One peculiarity of Africa’s renewable-energy sector is the rapid increase and likely future growth of Chinese involvement in large-scale renewable-energy infrastructure projects. Insights from other infrastructure, utility…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Unpacking local agency in China–Africa relations: Frictional encounters and development outcomes of solar power in Kenya China is a ‘rising power’ in Africa, and growing Chinese investments in the renewable energy sector in SSA (e.g. in wind and solar) are gaining traction. The ways in which China is shaping low-carbon energy transitions in SSA and the implications of it doing so merit attention. While existing research has tended to focus on fossil fuels and hydropower, it is crucial to undertake analysis of Chinese-backed wind and solar projects and of the micro-level engagements of Sino-African actors in order…
- Publication 14 December 2022 How regional factors influence the performance of science and technology parks: a comparative analysis of regional science parks in Thailand Recent research on science and technology parks (STPs) has called for including regional contextual factors in studies of STP performance. However, no study has yet systematically assessed how regional contextual factors support or hinder STP performance. We apply a systematic framework to a comparative case study of three regional STPs in Thailand and analyse the effects of varying conditions along five dimensions: urbanisation, industrial structure, regional institutions and culture,…
