- Project 1 May 2024 Implementation of Urban Nature-based Solutions for Mitigation and Adaptation Nature-based solutions (NbS) are increasingly understood to be effective and efficient options for addressing both mitigation and adaptation challenges in a wide range of settings. In urban contexts, they contribute to mitigation by sequestering and storing carbon in their biomass and in soils or by reducing the demand for cooling. NbS are also powerful options to reduce climate risk by significantly lowering the impacts of climate hazards, such as reducing the impact of wave height and…
- Project 1 May 2024 Socially Inclusive Energy Transition for Indonesia (SISET) Developing countries are undergoing green energy transitions, longer-term energy planning processes, and defining net-zero emission targets. Energy transitions cannot be considered in isolation from the broader socio-economic system. The shift away from fossil-fuels to new renewable energy solutions will have interactions and feedback effects also on the wider economy. The extent to which countries can benefit or miss out on opportunities from energy transition will also depend on their…
- Project 1 May 2024 Transition of Cities Towards Net Zero Transport in Developing Countries The Paris Agreement establishes a mechanism to fight climate change by contributing to the mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2019, GHG emissions from Transport accounted for about 23% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, of which 70% are from road transport. Thus, urban transport is vital for mitigating GHG emissions within road transport. Even more so in fast-developing Asian and African cities, where rapid urbanization has resulted in a very high demand for motorized…
- News 23 April 2024 Enhancing Ethiopia's Climate Action Capacity Measuring and tracking the impacts of planned climate actions, and managing related finance flows is vital for successful climate action. This is also the case for Ethiopia, where the country is now, after implementing an ICAT project, better placed to estimate the emission reduction potential of possible mitigation actions and their related costs, and establish a tracking framework to see the realized reductions of implemented policies. Additionally, Ethiopia is armed to manage and track its…
- News 18 April 2024 Strengthening NDC and Climate Finance Capacity in Latin America More than 250 people joined a recent UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre training course on NDC finance and proposal development tailored to bolster the capabilities of National Technical Institutions and governments across Latin America. This initiative, a part of the NDC Action Project, aimed to equip participants with the skills necessary to prepare concept notes for submission to financial institutions, a pivotal step in accessing climate finance for NDC implementation. The training sessions…
- News 16 April 2024 Uganda leads the way on electric cooking Along with UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre and a host of other partners, Uganda is introducing sustainable cooking to some of the most vulnerable communities, addressing energy access, health, and environmental sustainability. The goal is to create affordable access to solar electric-cooking for 150,000 households by 2027. At a meeting on 11 April, the Government of Uganda and multiple other UN, Private Sector, and Civil Society partners agreed to set up a steering committee to oversee the…

- News 6 March 2024 1.8 billion dollars in climate investments informed by Technology Needs Assessments More than 1.8 billion dollars have been invested in climate technology in projects informed by the global Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) project. The investments, a total of 1,839,101,175 USD, cover funding and co-financing from the Green Climate Fund and the Global Environment Facility for projects and technologies that are prioritized or highlighted in national TNAs or Technology Action Plans (TAPs) developed under the Global TNA project. The funding figures show that TNAs and TAPs have a…
