- Publication 14 December 2022 Contribution of circular economy strategies to climate change mitigation: Generic assessment methodology with focus on developing countries As part of the Paris Agreement, countries are asked to put forward their nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which present their proposed pathways to tackle climate change. To that end, circular economy (CE) has been proposed as a potentially important catalyzer to meet NDCs. Yet, the potential of CE strategies to help reach climate goals at the country scale has been little explored until now. Here, we propose a consistent step-wise methodology, which assesses quantitatively the…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Concurrent changes in latecomer capability-building and learning: Firm-level evidence from the Thai biogas industry The localisation of clean-tech industries allows developing countries to align their economic growth aspirations with efforts to reduce the associated environmental impacts. A key issue in this regard is the development of technological capabilities at local firms in these countries. Although much research has been conducted on this topic, we currently have only limited understanding of how the learning mechanisms that these so-called latecomer firms engage in change as they deepen their…
- Publication 14 December 2022 How Is Social Acceptance Reflected in National Renewable Energy Plans? Evidence from Three Wind-Rich Countries This article contributes to discussions of the social acceptance of renewable energy (RE) by developing an analytical framework that considers three dimensions (community, market, and political-regulator) at three different scales (macro, meso, and micro). This framework is conceived in order to identify those dynamics that are potentially counterproductive to the energy transition and need further policy emphasis, as well as supporting those that demonstrate a positive impact. Using this…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Poverty trap or means to escape poverty? Empirical evidence on the role of environmental income in rural Nepal Understanding how poverty persists and how this affects environmental reliance has policy implications for poverty reduction and environmental conservation. Employing a panel dataset from rural Nepal, we shed light on this issue, using a combination of parametric and nonparametric models. Results show that, as a population, households will converge at a single equilibrium point in the long term, hence indicating the absence of a poverty trap. The exact asset level of this single equilibrium…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Analysis of the impact of heat waves on daily mortality in urban and rural areas in Madrid The objective of this study was to analyze and compare the effect of high temperatures on daily mortality in the urban and rural populations in Madrid. Data were analyzed from municipalities in Madrid with a population of over 10,000 inhabitants during the period from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2020. Four groups were generated: Urban Metropolitan Center, Rural Northern Mountains, Rural Center, and Southern Rural. The dependent variable used was the rate of daily mortality due to natural…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Mapping of affordability levels for photovoltaic‑based electricity generation in the solar belt of sub‑Saharan Africa, East Asia and South Asia Lack of access to modern forms of energy hampers eforts to reduce poverty. The provision of electricity to of-grid communities is therefore a long-standing developmental goal. Yet, many of-grid electrifcation projects neglect mid- and long-term operation and maintenance costs. When this is the case, electricity services are unlikely to be afordable to the communities that are the project’s primary target. Here we show that, compared with diesel-powered electricity generation systems, solar…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Evolution of the minimum mortality temperature (1983–2018): Is Spain adapting to heat? The objective of this study was to analyze at the level of Spain’s 52 provinces province level the temporal evolution of minimum mortality temperatures (MMT) from 1983 to 2018, in order to determine whether the increase in MMT would be sufficient to compensate for the increase in environmental temperatures in Spain for the period. It also aimed to analyze whether the rate of evolution of MMT would be sufficient, were it to remain constant, to compensate for the predicted increase in…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Determinants of adoption in open-source hardware: A review of small wind turbines The successes of open-source software raise the question of whether technological hardware that has been developed based on an open and collaborative mode of innovation can achieve similar levels of diffusion. While some expect such open-source hardware (OSH) to lead to transformational changes in the ways technologies are produced, the available empirical evidence suggests that, to date, the diffusion of most OSH applications has been modest. In this paper, we focus on the limited uptake of…
