- Publication 15 December 2022 Impacts of climate change on the public health of the Mediterranean Basin population - Current situation, projections, preparedness and adaptation The Mediterranean Basin is undergoing a warming trend with longer and warmer summers, an increase in the frequency and the severity of heat waves, changes in precipitation patterns and a reduction in rainfall amounts. In this unique populated region, which is characterized by significant gaps in the socio-economic levels particularly between the North (Europe) and South (Africa), parallel with population growth and migration, increased water demand and forest fires risk – the vulnerability of…
- Publication 14 December 2022 A pathway design framework for national low greenhouse gas emission development strategies The Paris Agreement introduces long-term strategies as an instrument to inform progressively more ambitious emission reduction objectives, while holding development goals paramount in the context of national circumstances. In the lead up to the twenty-first Conference of the Parties, the Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project developed mid-century low-emission pathways for 16 countries, based on an innovative pathway design framework. In this Perspective, we describe this framework and show how…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Control method of multi-energy system based on layered control architecture The application of hierarchical control to complicated systems can considerably simplify the complexity of system control. The multi-energy system can be divided into superior control (such as load forecasting), intermediate control (dispatch control of each subsystem), and subordinate control (equipment operation control under each subsystem), and a realisation path for the theory of overall control strategy based on hierarchical control is formulated. In this work, the combined cooling,…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Exploring Institutional and Socio-Economic Settings for the Development of Energy Communities in Europe Energy communities (ECs), intended as collective action initiatives in the energy field involving citizens’ participation, have been gaining relevance for the past decades as an alternative way to organize the energy chain to challenge the incumbent system. With Europe’s recently adopted Clean Energy Package, ECs found a formal recognition by the European Union as potential actors of the transition of the energy system towards a wider and more decentralized use of renewable sources. Although…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Short-term influence of environmental factors and social variables COVID-19 disease in Spain during first wave (Feb–May 2020) This study aims to identify the combined role of environmental pollutants and atmospheric variables at short term on the rate of incidence (TIC) and on the hospital admission rate (TIHC) due to COVID-19 disease in Spain. This study used information from 41 of the 52 provinces of Spain (from Feb. 1, 2021 to May 31, 2021). Using TIC and TIHC as dependent variables, and average daily concentrations of PM10 and NO2 as independent variables. Meteorological variables included maximum daily…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Influence of urban form on the cooling effect of a small urban river Urban warming due to increased urbanization is becoming a serious environmental problem, requiring urban planners to consider heat mitigation strategies that reduce urban air temperature. Urban rivers play an important role in reducing urban heat through evaporation and transfer of sensible heat, known as the river cooling effect (RCE). We used detailed field measurements to calculate the river cooling intensity (RCI) and river cooling distance (RCD) for the Cheonggye River in Seoul, Korea in…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Contribution of circular economy strategies to climate change mitigation: Generic assessment methodology with focus on developing countries As part of the Paris Agreement, countries are asked to put forward their nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which present their proposed pathways to tackle climate change. To that end, circular economy (CE) has been proposed as a potentially important catalyzer to meet NDCs. Yet, the potential of CE strategies to help reach climate goals at the country scale has been little explored until now. Here, we propose a consistent step-wise methodology, which assesses quantitatively the…
- Publication 14 December 2022 Concurrent changes in latecomer capability-building and learning: Firm-level evidence from the Thai biogas industry The localisation of clean-tech industries allows developing countries to align their economic growth aspirations with efforts to reduce the associated environmental impacts. A key issue in this regard is the development of technological capabilities at local firms in these countries. Although much research has been conducted on this topic, we currently have only limited understanding of how the learning mechanisms that these so-called latecomer firms engage in change as they deepen their…
