- Publication 16 August 2021 The Best of Two Worlds. Article 6 mechanisms shall contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) The Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were two milestone achievements in 2015. The Intended Nationally DeterminedContributions (INDCs) put forward by Parties before the Climate Conference in Paris will have to be fully embedded in the 2030 agenda to achieve truly transformational, lasting impacts for low carbon and SDGs and, ultimately, resilient communities that are able to quickly respond to and recover from adverse situations.
- Publication 16 August 2021 Learning from CDM SD tool experience for Article 6.4 in the Paris Agreement The Paris Agreement (PA) emphasizes the intrinsic relationship between climate change and sustainable development (SD) and welcomes the 2030 agenda for the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, there is a lack of assessment approaches to ensure that climate and development goals are achieved in an integrated fashion and trade-offs avoided. Article 6.4 of the PA introduces a new Sustainable Mitigati on Mechanism (SMM) with the dual aim to contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Deconstructing the concept of renewable energy-based mini-grids for rural electrification in East Africa The goal of providing universal energy access to all by 2030 under the UN-led SE4ALL initiative calls for new and innovative solutions to rural electrification and is fuelling the recent interest in mini-grids. Mini-grid solutions are emerging as a third alternative to rural electrification, coming between the option of large-scale grid extension and pico-scale stand-alone solutions like solar home systems or solar lanterns. International expectations of mini-grids are high, with the…
- Publication 16 August 2021 India’s GHG Emission Reduction and Sustainable Development India has made voluntary commitment for reducing the emission intensity of GDP in the year 2020 by 20–25 % below that in the year 2005. The Indian approach is based on delineating and implementing cost-effective mitigation actions which can contribute to national sustainable development goals while remaining aligned to the UNFCCC’s expressed objective of keeping the average global surface temperature increase to below 2 C over the preindustrial average. This chapter assesses three emission…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Linking Mitigation and Adaptation in Carbon Forestry Projects: Evidence from Belize Committed action to deal with climate change requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions, i.e., mitigation, as well as dealing with its ensuing consequences, i.e., adaptation. To date, most policies and projects have promoted mitigation and adaptation separately, and they have very rarely considered integrating these two objectives. In this article, we develop a multi-dimensional framework to explore the extent to which climate mitigation forestry projects bring adaptation concerns into their…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Mapping the Indicators. An Analysis of Sustainable Development Requirements of Selected Market Mechanisms and Multilateral Institutions Investors are paying more and more attention to the co-benefits of climate finance. Financing activities aimed at emission mitigation must not only result in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the enhancement of mitigation, adaptive capacity and adaptation strategies, but should also produce additional outcomes on other environmental, social or economic aspects of sustainable development. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was created precisely to cover these two aspects: firstly, to…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Assessing the greenhouse gas impact of a renewable energy feed-in tariff policy in mozambique: Towards ndc ambition and recommendations to effectively measure, report, and verify its implementation Parties to the Paris Agreement (PA) have agreed on the goal of limiting the increase in global average temperature to well below 2◦C and are pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5◦C. Countries’ nationally determined contributions (NDCs) comprise the main framework used to achieve this. In this context, Mozambique’s NDC includes, amongst other actions, increased renewable energy (RE) generation. This article presents the results of the assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) impacts of the…
- Publication 16 August 2021 Climate policy integration: taking advantage of policy windows? An analysis of the energy and environment sectors in Mexico (1997–2018) Given the crosscutting character of climate change, improving our understanding of its integration into sectorial policy domains is relevant. We contribute empirically with a case study in Mexico where we analyze climate policy integration in terms of policy outputs and processes. Firstly, we adapted an approach to measure events of regulatory output change and applied it to our original dataset of changes in Mexican environmental and energy laws and regulations between 1997 and 2018. Secondly,…
